Of all the different available fans, centrifugal fans, which are also known as centrifugal blowers, are the most common. While many people have heard the name, some still have no real understanding of what the benefits or applications are for this type of blower.
Centrifugal
Centrifugal, which is also known as a radial fan or blower, is a type of high-pressure blower. That means that high-speed blades provide velocity to air and other gasses. In addition to different blade orientations, which include straight, forward curved, and backward curved, these blowers are available in different voltages and speeds. Generally speaking, this high-pressure compressor blower is operated by an electric motor, although some do operate on drive motors.
Because of the volume and pressure of airflow, centrifugal blowers’ primary use is in air conditioning systems. However, these blowers can also be used to control dust, among other things. Based on the unique design of this high-pressure blower, which is often referred to as a hamster wheel, it is the preferred method for air circulation and cooling in office buildings, warehouses, plants, and other large spaces.
Axial
Some people refer to axial fans as blowers. In this case, blades that rotate around an axis work by drawing air in parallel to that axis, followed by forcing air out in the same direction. Although these blowers produce a high rate of airflow, the air is at low pressure. Unlike centrifugal blowers that can keep huge spaces cool, axial blowers are designed for cooling specific small spots or components within machineries like computers and photocopy machines.
Cross Flow
These blowers are commonly used by the electronics and HVAC industries, producing an even laminar airflow that, similar to axial blowers, keeps components from overheating. Whether mounted vertically or horizontally, these blowers are designed to deliver a two-dimensional flow. These blowers work especially well in areas with limited space.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are distinct differences between the three unique types of blowers. The benefit of centrifugal blowers is that they produce high-pressure and large volume airflow that keeps big spaces cool. In comparison, both axial and cross flow blowers are designed to keep various components from overheating.
